The digital business landscape has evolved dramatically over the past decade with diverse business models accessible to aspiring entrepreneurs of all backgrounds to build location-independent income. Consider how well they align with your strengths, experience, and vision for your entrepreneurial future.
Here’s an overview of popular online business models:
E-commerce (Selling Physical or Digital Products Online):
What It Is: Businesses that sell products through online stores, either via owned/leased platforms (e.g., Shopify, WooCommerce) and/or marketplaces (e.g., Amazon FBA, Etsy). Examples include dropshipping, print-on-demand, or private label brands selling nutritional supplements, apparel, electronics, or digital downloads.
Characteristics: Inventory management, customer acquisition through paid ads and/or SEO, and customer service are critical. Revenue comes from one-time sales or subscriptions (e.g., monthly product boxes).
Required Skillsets:
Digital marketing (e.g., Google Ads, Facebook Ads, email marketing) to drive traffic and sales.
Inventory and logistics management to handle stock, shipping, and returns.
Customer service to manage inquiries, refunds, and reviews.
Helpful Background/Experience:
Experience in retail, supply chain, or logistics (e.g., managing inventory for a physical store).
Marketing expertise, especially in paid ads or email campaigns, to optimize customer acquisition.
Familiarity with e-commerce platforms (e.g., Shopify, Amazon Seller Central) for seamless operations.
Fit For: Individuals who enjoy marketing, product selection, and logistics, and are comfortable managing customer-facing operations.
Amazon Stores: Mentioned above, but separated out due to its increased popularity over recent years.
What It Is: Amazon stores are branded digital storefronts within Amazon’s marketplace, allowing sellers to showcase curated product collections under their own brand identity. They are often built using private label, wholesale, or retail arbitrage products, enhanced by Amazon’s Storefronts program (launched to support small businesses). Examples include niche stores selling fitness gear, pet supplies, or home décor, leveraging Amazon’s traffic and fulfillment (e.g., FBA) to drive sales.
Characteristics: Revenue comes from product sales (one-time or subscription-based), with a focus on branding, customer retention, and leveraging Amazon’s search and advertising tools (e.g., Sponsored Ads). Stores rely on Amazon’s infrastructure (e.g., FBA for logistics) but require sellers to manage product listings, marketing, and customer feedback to stand out.
Required Skillsets:
Digital marketing and advertising (e.g., Amazon PPC, Sponsored Brands) to optimize visibility and conversions.
Branding and product curation to create a cohesive store identity and attract repeat customers.
Inventory management (or oversight of FBA) to ensure stock availability and handle returns.
Analytical skills to track performance metrics (e.g., conversion rates, ACoS) and adjust strategies.
Helpful Background/Experience:
Experience with Amazon Seller Central or FBA operations to navigate the platform’s tools and policies.
Marketing or e-commerce background, especially in paid ads or brand management, to maximize store performance.
Retail or product sourcing experience (e.g., private label development, wholesale negotiation) to build the product catalog.
Familiarity with Amazon’s ecosystem (e.g., understanding A9 algorithm, review management) to maintain competitiveness.
Fit For: Individuals with marketing or branding expertise who want to leverage Amazon’s massive audience, are comfortable with platform-specific operations, and prefer a business model integrated into a larger marketplace rather than a standalone site.
Software as a Service (SaaS):
What It Is: Subscription-based software platforms that solve specific problems for users, such as project management tools (e.g., Trello), CRMs (e.g., HubSpot), or niche solutions (e.g., scheduling apps).
Characteristics: Recurring revenue model (ARR/MRR), high scalability, and focus on customer retention (low churn). Requires ongoing development, customer support, and marketing to attract new users.

Product management to oversee feature updates and user experience improvements.
Technical knowledge (or ability to manage developers) to maintain and scale the platform.

Fit For: Tech-savvy individuals or those with experience managing subscription businesses, who can handle technical operations and customer retention.
Affiliate Marketing:
What It Is: Websites or content platforms that earn commissions by promoting third-party products or services (e.g., stroller ads on a parenting blog through Amazon Associates or ClickBank). Examples include niche blogs, comparison sites, or review platforms.
Characteristics: Revenue from affiliate commissions, often passive once content ranks well. Heavy reliance on SEO, content creation, and traffic generation.
Required Skillsets:
SEO (search engine optimization) to rank content and drive organic traffic.
Content creation (writing, video production) to produce engaging, conversion-focused material.
Analytical skills to track affiliate performance and optimize for higher commissions.
Helpful Background/Experience:
Digital marketing or SEO experience to optimize content for search engines.
Writing or journalism background to create high-quality, persuasive content.
Experience with affiliate networks (e.g., Amazon Associates, ShareASale) to navigate programs and payouts.
Fit For: Writers, SEO specialists, or marketers who prefer a content-driven, potentially passive business model with minimal customer interaction.
Digital Marketing Agency:
What It Is: Agencies offering services like PPC (pay-per-click) advertising, SEO, social media management, or content marketing to clients, often on a retainer basis.
Characteristics: Service-based model with recurring revenue from client retainers. Requires client management, project delivery, and consistent results (e.g., ROAS, traffic growth).
Required Skillsets:
Digital marketing expertise (e.g., Google Ads, SEO, social media strategy) to deliver measurable results.
Client relationship management to maintain satisfaction and retention.
Project management to oversee campaigns and meet deadlines.
Helpful Background/Experience:
Marketing or advertising experience, especially in delivering client campaigns.

Fit For: Tech-savvy individuals with server management experience who can handle technical operations and support.

If none of the above seem like a good fit, don’t fret. There are countless types of online businesses out there that don’t fit into any of the above categories. I’ve seen and sold companies that source electrical components from overseas suppliers to sell them to US companies, websites that offer services to international clientele wanting to move to Italy (relocation services, language services, etc.), steel pipe sourcing and logistics management for the construction industry, ticket brokering websites, and many, many more—all completely managed online and from anywhere in the world. The types of online businesses that exist in the world are as vast and unique as the people who own and operate them. There is an online business to be found for everyone and anyone who desires to get a jumpstart into entrepreneurship.
